Jamaica Kincaid's expansive essay candidly appraises the ten-by-twelve-mile island in the British West Indies where she grew up, Antigua, and makes palpable the impact of European colonialism and tourism.

This book is a missive to the traveler, whether American or European, who wants to escape the banality and corruption of some large place. Kincaid, powerful and resolute, reminds us that the Antiguan people, formerly British subjects, are unable to escape the same drawbacks of their own tiny realm--that behind the benevolent Caribbean scenery are human lives, always complex and often fraught with injustice.

 

An(Other) World Book Club in partnership with Masterworks

Long Story Short created reading lists to complement ‘(An)other World’, an exhibit at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art that ‘positions the island and its artists not as passive subjects but as active contributors of cultural authorship, innovation and historical momentum.’  

The books in the adult reading list have been selected to be in dialogue with the exhibit and, explore themes of (neo)colonialism, identity, migration, and access. Over the 6 month exhibition period, readers will be invited to three discussions, each one featuring fiction and non-fiction.
